Dr. Devgan's Stitch-work Lauded in Vogue

Written by Jack Nicastro

Vogue’s Maya Singer recently published a piece exploring the large surge in cosmetic surgery during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Maya posits that a combination of an abundance of time away from the office, ubiquity of face coverings and sheer boredom account for the uptick in aesthetic-enhancing procedures. Moreover, just as Dr. Devgan hypothesizes in her Eyelash Index, Maya reiterated that the amount of time spent on zoom seeing our sunken under eyes and distorted noses may also be responsible for renewed interest in facial cosmetic surgery.

Maya herself sought out Dr. Devgan to remove an invisible cyst from a nasolabial fold and lamented how the only person to appreciate her “her teensy incision with a couture-worthy stitch” and “her fine handiwork was [her] boyfriend.” Whatever the reason for the increased interest for cosmetic surgery, those who are in the market for bespoke, virtually imperceptible aesthetic enhancements go to Dr. Devgan.

Dr. Devgan interviewed by Coveteur on the subject of Suture-Suspension Lifting

Written by Jack Nicastro

Coveteur recently wrote an exposé detailing the uses and limitations of thread lifts in cosmetic surgery. To get an expert opinion on the matter, Coveteur consulted Dr. Devgan on what it is and why she recommends it to patients.

While commonly referred to as simply “thread lifting,” the official name of the procedure is: “suture-suspension lifting.” Dr. Devgan explains that this minimally invasive cosmetic option works by using barbed surgical sutures; first the threads find purchase deep in the tissue, then tension is applied to reposition sagging skin.

Debuting in the 1990’s, Dr. Devgan details that the sutures have credibly improved over time. Using modern technology, custom-molded polymer sutures are able to be placed deeper in the tissue and hold more weight - two and a half pounds each - than ever before. Even though suture-suspension is still not as permanent a solution as facelift, it has nonetheless improved “exponentially.”

Some plastic surgeons are hesitant to practice thread lifts as they believe the results aren’t permanent enough. Dr. Devgan - who has performed the procedure over a thousand times - believes they provide an important middle ground between injectables and surgical facelifts. While facelifts remain the gold standard of cosmetic surgery, suture-suspension presents a great option for those patients who do not wish to undergo the general anesthesia and prolonged recovery times associated with more traditional surgical methods.

5 Easy, Breezy and Free Skincare Tips

Written by Jack Nicastro

The most important part of skin care is developing and adhering to a skincare regimen that works best for you. Dr. Devgan Scientific Beauty features myriad products designed and clinically-tested to help you achieve your skincare goals and our dedicated staff on the beauty team are ready, willing, and able to help you choose the products that are right for you! Our skincare F.A.Q. page which contains detailed information on the purpose and function of each of our products is also a great resource. In addition to products, staying hydrated, getting a sufficient amount of sleep, and avoiding stress are also tried and true methods for a glowing complexion. That being said, here are some other healthy habits to help your skin look and feel its best!

1. Just as one adopts a skincare regimen to look and feel your best, staying healthy with physical exercise will further this goal. Wearing appropriate clothing for physical activities is imperative to improving skin quality. Clothes that produce friction and don’t wick away sweat are likely to clog your pores which can result in chest and back acne.

2. Breakouts around your hairline, forehead, or neck could be a result of hair products clogging your pores. To avoid this, be certain to completely rinse off the conditioner from your hair, cover your face while applying hair spray, and keep face products away from the hairline.

3. It is natural to support your jaw or chin when you are low on caffeine and the work day is drawing to a close, but, if you want to keep your skin clear and acne-free, you must resist resting your head on your hands! Given the amount of time we spend touching our phone screens, clacking away on our keyboards, and clicking our mice, our hands are bound to be covered in acne-causing bacteria. Add to that the heat of our palms and weight of our heads, and the environment becomes perfect for bacteria to proliferate and cause you a bad skin day.

4. Given that the sun’s ultraviolet rays can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes of direct exposure, it is important to limit your time spent unprotected from the sun. Remember to ALWAYS wear sunscreen, even if you don’t see the sun. Avoid direct sunlight during solar noon, the time of day when the sun is at its peak and its rays are at their strongest, to avoid the worst UV damage.

5. Completing a thorough nighttime skin routine is essential in maintaining excellent skin quality. The skin regenerates itself the most between 9PM to 12AM when cell mitosis occurs at its highest rates, so it is necessary to provide it with the nutrients to help it do so. However, facilitating your skin’s rejuvenation with products is not the only aspect of a good nighttime skin regimen; sleeping on your back will prevent you from developing positional wrinkles that can be caused by sleeping on your side or stomach. Crucially, since these wrinkles are caused by pushing and pulling of skin and not by muscle contractions, they cannot be removed with botox. In the inevitable event that you roll over onto your slide while sleeping, silk pillowcases can help prevent acne by providing a gentler environment for the skin than traditional materials. Memory foam pillows also help prevent wrinkles from developing by not compressing the skin.

In conclusion, you shouldn’t rely on skincare routines alone, but should couple them with healthy practices that will not only help you achieve beautiful skin, but a happier life!

Sticking to Skincare

Written by Jack Nicastro

skincare.jpeg

As creatures of habit, we enjoy sticking to our tried and true routines. Sadly, this comfort with sticking to old habits does not translate to us being able to easily form new ones. Not such a bad scenario when our habits include brushing our teeth, working out and going to sleep at a reasonable hour. A worse situation when we’ve fallen into the bad habit of neglecting the largest organ of our bodies: the skin.

Starting a skincare routine doesn’t need to be complicated, challenging or painful. As any leadership or personal development coach will tell you, your goals need to be “S.M.A.R.T.” in order for you to achieve them. This witty, memorable little acronym stands for “Specific, Measurable, A Reward associated with doing it, and Trackable.” Luckily, designing, planning and following through with a skincare routine is not just a smart idea, but a “S.M.A.R.T.” one as well!

More tips and tricks for sticking with a new habit is to break the larger goal, let’s say, oh, I don’t know, beautiful skin, into a series of small, discrete steps such as the ones that make up a complete skincare routine. Moreover, we generally find it easier to commit to habits when we are part of a community of people who are doing the same. Following Dr. Devgan’s Scientific Beauty blog will give you a sense of belonging to a community of people who understand, are passionate about and actively participate in comprehensive skincare regimens may give you the boost you need to create and stick to your own!

Aside from the techniques that make adopting a new habit easier, what’s even more important is knowing why you want to improve the quality of your skin. Are you doing it for yourself or are you doing it because you believe it’s what your partner expects? This kind of introspection can be intimidating to some people, but you come out of the other side of it having a much more solid foundation upon which to put in the work to form a new habit.

Experts estimate that it takes between two to three months to turn a pledge into a habit that becomes so automatic that it no longer feels like an onerous burden; it feels like something you just do - like brushing your teeth. To help you along to the point when skincare is as second nature as brushing your teeth or showering, we have compiled a list of handy habit-forming tools:

Look inward to understand why you want better skin.

  1.  Set alerts on your smartphone to remind you when and what you need to do.

  2.  Start simple; washing your face and moisturizing is much better than nothing!

    • We recommend Dr. Devgan’s Advanced Revitalizing Cleanser which gently rinses the skin of excess oil and grime while moisturizing it with hyaluronic acid as well as her Advanced Recovery Cream which decreases inflammation while increasing water retention and soothing skin with its active ingredients Vitamin E and Provitamin B5.

  3.  Use the buddy system; finding someone who is equally (or more) committed to skincare than you is a great way to make sure that you follow through with your habit.

    • Dr. Devgan herself is devoted to her skincare regimen and posts pictures of her personal results on her instagram @laradevganmd.

  4.  Automate as much of the process as possible. Keep your skincare products in order of their use and easily accessible so that you can seamlessly transition to each step during your wakeup and bedtime routine.

    • Be sure to check our FAQ page to make sure you are applying the products in the correct order!

  5. Find a skincare role model and follow her on social media so that, when the habit seems too time-consuming or complicated, you remind yourself of the light that beckons from the end of the tunnel.

    • Amazing skincare results can be found on Dr. Devgan Scientific Beauty’s Instagram page @drlaradevgan.

  6. Along the lines of finding and emulating a role model, read up on the benefits of skincare so that you can describe to yourself precisely what you are working for.

  7. Not only should you be aware of the benefits that come from succeeding in your newfound skincare routine, but you should also be aware of the consequences of failing in it.

    • A simple google search for “fine lines”, “age spots”or “sun damage” should do the trick.

  8. Take pride and congratulate yourself on your daily victory of sticking to your routine!

  9. Accept imperfection. Some days you’ll forget to take off your makeup or you’ll oversleep and not have time for your full routine - and that’s O.K.!

Dr. Devgan’s Platinum Long Lash Steals the Show at Cosmo

Written by Jack Nicastro

Cosmopolitan fawns over Dr. Devgan’s Platinum Long Lash in their piece, “Cosmo Loves: This Eyelash Serum Gave me Legit Baby Doll-Level Lashes.” In case the title doesn’t speak for itself, its author and long-lash lover, Madeleine Reeves, goes on to detail exactly why she fell head over heels for the “pure magic” of Dr. Devgan’s eyelash enhancement serum.

Madeleine explains how Dr. Devgan’s eyelash serum works by creating the ideal environment for growth with its combination of vitamin B5, clover flower extract, and peptides. Unlike the time-consuming process of applying eyelash extensions, Madeline describes how quick and painless the applying the serum is: “you just trace it along the base of your lashes once or twice a day (the brand says it's safe to use while wearing contacts, FYI), let it dry, and live your life.”

As specified on Dr. Devgan Scientific Beauty’s product details, Madeleine witnessed her “wow-they’re-so-long-lengths” after around 6 months. Not only does Madeleine rave about how Dr. Devgan’s Platinum Long Lash improved the length of her eyelashes, but she got amazing results in filling out her eyebrows as well: “within about five weeks, the spot had filled in enough to the point where it no longer bothered me. ”

Madeleine recounts the stunning effect that she experienced when coupling the eyelash serum with mascara as “perfect for that extra little bit of polish for Zoom life.” Given the vast amount of time we’re spending behind computer cameras these days, it is no wonder that Madeleine wants to look her best on screen - further proof of Dr. Devgan’s hypothesized “Eyelash Index.

Even for those that want the extravagance and flair of eyelash extensions, Madeline notes how the lash serum keeps “your lashes strong and minimize how easily they fall out.” Clearly, whether you wear mascara or eyelash extensions (or neither!), investing in Dr. Devgan’s Platinum Long Lash is the way to go!

Retinol: What it is and why you should use it

Written by Jack Nicastro

retinol.jpg

Where did retinol come from?

A derivative of vitamin A, Retinol has been wildly popular since 1971 when Dr. Kligman, a dermatologist from the University of Pennsylvania, discovered that retinoic acid proved effective both in treating acne for young people and smoothing wrinkles for older folks.

What are its benefits and shortcomings?

Retinol is a chemical precursor to retinoic acid and is metabolized by the skin cells as such when applied topically as a cream, oil or water-based solution. While extraordinarily effective in acne-fighting and wrinkle-smoothing, it has the potential to leave skin dried out and irritated depending on its concentration.

Why is my skin peeling?

It is not uncommon for sensitive skin to undergo a Retinoid Reaction, i.e. temporary  contact dermatitis. This harmless reaction (though uncomfortable) reaction is more likely to occur with higher concentrations of retinol. For this reason, we recommended applying our mild (2.5 times) concentration once every two to three days,  if you haven’t ever used a retinol-based product previously. Gradually approach daily use as your skin acclimates to the retinol.

What is the right concentration for me?

Have you added anything to reduce the dryness caused by the retinol?

Yes! We recently added bakuchiol to our retinol serum as its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-bacterial properties help ameliorate the dryness and irritation caused by high concentrations of retinol.

Dr. Devgan featured in Who What Wear’s article: “The Best Youth-Enhancing Skin Regimens Include These 8 Strategic Ingredients”

Written by Jack Nicastro

whowhatwherelogo.jpg

Dr. Devgan offers her expert advice to explain to Who What Wear why you ought to incorporate hyaluronic acid and vitamin c into your skincare routine as well as why you should be staying away from creams claiming to vanish stretch marks, facial oils and large fragment facial scrubs.

hyaluronic serum.jpg

With all the hype surrounding it, Dr. Devgan’s confirms that hyaluronic acid does indeed produce glossy, glass-like skin: “it’s a major component of the body’s collagen, and it's a complex sugar molecule that can absorb 1000 times its weight in water.” Dr. Devgan’s mixed molecular weight Hyaluronic Serum possesses smaller fragments of hyaluronic acid which, as she states in the article, “more effectively penetrate into the dermis to hydrate from within while the larger fragments reside on top of the skin to create a beautiful finish."

vitamin c.jpg

The subject of a similar degree of hubbub, Dr. Devgan explains how antioxidant-rich vitamin c serums fade brown spots, reduces discoloration and fine lines by “scaveng[ing] free radical[s] and environmental damage that has compromised the skin.” Dr. Devgan’s own Vitamin C + B + E Ferulic Serum is available for those who want to achieve the kind of luminous skin one sees in beauty magazines.

Now that we’ve discussed what you should be using, it’s high-time we explain what you should not: there is no such thing as a stretch-mark clearing cream, so those that market themselves as such are frankly fraudulent; the molecules in facial oils are too large to penetrate the dermis to hydrate it from within and may result in clogged pores; large fragment facial scrubs regularly result in micro-tearing of healthy skin and chemical peels can result in irritation and dryness if executed poorly by an amateur.
