Correcting lip filler that is lumpy and bumpy

With the increasing popularity of lip augmentation (lip filler or lip injections), I have seen an increase in patients who come in to my New York City private practice for corrective procedures after they have been treated by other doctors.

The lips are a focal point of the face, and precise measurements and careful attention to anatomic detail are needed to create beautiful results. Often, a patient who has less-than-ideal results is experiencing one of the following issues:

  • lumps
  • bumpiness of lip contour
  • asymmetry
  • imbalance of upper and lower lips
  • poorly defined Cupid's bow
  • overly augmented look ("duck lips" or "trout pout")
  • poor harmony with other facial features

When correcting lip filler done by another practitioner, there are several possible approaches:

  1. Do nothing and allow the filler to dissolve on its own. Most hyaluronic acid based fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Belotero have a lifespan of somewhere between 4 and 12 months. They are naturally degraded by the body, even if nothing is done to them, over the course of time and normal movement.
  2. Dissolve the filler with hyaluronidase enzyme such as Vitrase or Hylenix. These enzymes, when injected, will cause hyaluronic acid based fillers to completely dissolve within about 5 minutes, with repeated massage. This returns the lips to their baseline prior to injection.
  3. Perform corrective lip filler. Additional filler can be added to smooth out evenness, irregularity, and asymmetry to mask the prior undesirable appearance. This is a good option if someone wants a look to be slightly fuller.

Getting a beautiful belly button with tummy tuck surgery

Actual patient of Dr. Devgan, before and after abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), NYC.

One of the key features of a natural and attractive abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is an attractive belly button.

From a plastic surgical standpoint, an attractive belly button has a few important characteristics:

  • small in size
  • positioned in the midline of the abdomen
  • positioned at the level of the hipbones
  • shadowing or superior hooding
  • ovoid in shape
  • scar hidden in the interior of the umbilicus
  • appropriate for your body habitus

For every tummy tuck patient I take care of, I make a special effort to pay attention to the details of the operation, including the small things like umbilicus placement and aesthetics. If you are thinking about a tummy tuck, I advise you to get as close to your goal weight as possible in advance of surgery, in order to have the most beautiful possible surgical results.

Abdominal liposculpture to achieve an amazing six-pack

Liposuction is a powerful tool when a patient is at or close to his or her goal weight. If you are thinking about liposuction, I advise you to regard it as a "spot treatment" to refine and define a physique that is already fairly close to where you want it to be.

For those who are on weight loss journeys, one reasonable rule of thumb is to try to be within 15-20 pounds of your goal weight before considering liposuction. Once you get to that point, liposuction can be an excellent way to sculpt, define, and contour your body.

This patient was an already fit male who desired abdominal etching to achieve a fitter six-pack type of look. He was very happy with his result.

I was honored to be featured on US News and World Report as a doctor to follow on Instagram and Snapchat. I believe that there is a responsible, educational, and interesting way to share plastic and reconstructive surgery with the public. Despite what the media may have you believe, plastic surgery is a serious academic discipline, a challenging medical specialty, and an artistic field.

One expert quoted in the US News article recommends following doctors on social media who have "strong credentials, who post about contemporary issues in healthcare and have a strong patient-centered voice." I am pleased to be regarded as among this group.

Cheekbone and lip filler to rejuvenate the face

Actual patient of Dr. Devgan, before and after cheekbone and lip augmentation

For younger patients and those who prefer to avoid the downtime of surgery, injectable fillers are a powerful technique to optimize cosmetic outcomes.

Some of the most popular procedures in my New York City private practice include cheekbone and lip augmentation. While this can be done surgically and more durably with autologous fat transfer, the newest generation of injectable fillers can also accomplish a similar result with no downtime.

Cheekbone filler helps to define and sculpt the face, improve shadowing underneath the cheekbones, soften the nasolabial folds, and lift the appearance of the jowls. Cheekbone filler creates a prettier, thinner, more heart-shaped facial conformation that signals youth and beauty.

Lip filler improves the fullness, contour, symmetry, and definition of the lips. It can be as natural or as voluptuous as desired. Lip filler is popular as a way to add beauty and interest to an inherently beautiful part of the face, the pout.

As a surgeon, I pride myself on in-depth knowledge of surgical anatomy and mastery of the full spectrum of techniques from injections to incisions. For this reason, I enjoy being able to offer my patients minimally invasive procedures with no downtime (as well as more intensive surgical procedures).
