Aspiring Surgeons Ask, Dr. Devgan Answers

Dr. Devgan was recently asked by We Lead Surgery to field questions from students interested in careers in surgery, to give them a better sense of her journey. We Lead Surgery is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the advancement of women in surgery, founded by students at the University of California at San Francisco.

In this segment, Dr. Devgan answers the questions of aspiring surgeons and individuals who are curious about what it's like being a female leader in a male-dominated industry.

Dr. Devgan's Non-Surgical Procedures: Butt Augmentation

A tummy tuck is one of the most transformative procedures in Dr. Devgan's private practice in the Upper East Side of New York City. It also is a procedure that has one of the highest patient satisfaction ratings.

Labiaplasty (or cosmetic rejuvenation of the female genitalia) is one of the most popular procedures in Dr. Devgan's New York City plastic surgery private practice. 

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to make the female genital area more aesthetic and comfortable. Women seek labiaplasty because they are unhappy with the way their private parts look, or because they are uncomfortable with friction caused by exercising, sexual intercourse, or wearing fitted clothes. Labiaplasty can address the inner labia (labia minora), the outer labia (labia majora), the clitoral hood, or any combination of those areas. Atrophy or sagging of the labia majora can also be addressed with filler or fat grafting.

Labiaplasty is done under local anesthesia with or without light sedation and the surgery itself typically takes under 1 hour. 

There are two ways of going about a labiaplasty; the edge technique or the wedge technique. Dr. Devgan is well-versed in both techniques, however, the wedge technique is preferred for many reasons. The wedge technique leaves a buried scar that is less noticeable and leaves the external genitalia with a smooth contour. Swelling, when using the wedge technique, resolves more quickly that when using the Edge technique.

After surgery, patients are given a maxi pad with ointment to wear. Patients are advised to keep their pelvis elevated with one to two pillows and to ice the area to reduce swelling. 

80% of the final surgical result are seen at 1 month after surgery and 90% after 6 weeks, although it takes a full 6 months for all swelling to completely dissipate.
