Yahoo News recently published the article “Everything You Need to Know About Facelifts”, detailing one of the most common plastic surgeries, from pre-op and post-op rules, variations of the procedure, and nuances and innovations of the procedure.

Though many patients take advantage of noninvasive alternatives to conquer the effects of aging, the facelift is the gold standard for more permanent results. Though facelifts have advanced considerably over the years from simply tightening the skin, to now restoring facial musculature and reviving the youthful appearance of our younger selves, the procedure, unfortunately, cannot stop the aging process. “We can only turn back the clock with a lift, we can’t stop it from ticking,” Dr. Devgan adds.

Generally, facelifts can be divided into three subcategories: the full facelift, addressing skin sagging and muscle laxity in the mid face and neck regions; the mini facelift, addressing a specific area of the face; and the necklift, addressing sagging and laxity in the jawline, jowls, and neck regions.  One of the popular add-ons to the procedure is eyelid surgery. According to Dr. Devgan, “the facelift can’t fix aging eyes, so it’s very common for patients to do an upper and lower blepharoplasty with their facelift.”  Along with most anti-aging solutions, facelift techniques are constantly progressing.  Doctors predict the future of the procedure to require less downtime, advancement in noninvasive alternatives, and improvements in regenerative medicine. Dr. Devgan’s most recent essay, “Surgical Cosmetic Procedures of the Face,” has just been published by Elsevier, an online resource for professionals and institutions working to advance healthcare, science, and technology. In her article, Dr. Devgan provides an overview of select facial procedures, including the blepharoplasty, brow lift, lip lift, rhinoplasty, rhytidectomy, lower rhytidectomy (neck lift), and submental liposuction, along with techniques for each. These facial surgeries mean to address a number of age-related concerns, such as tissue laxity, hollowing around the eyes, heaviness of the nasolabial folds and jowls, and weakening of the muscular tissues of the head and neck. For each of these procedures, Dr. Devgan discusses her surgical technique, anesthesia requirements, and potentials risk and/or scarring concerns.

Dr. Devgan divides her discussion of the above procedures into three sections: upper face, mid face, and lower face, with the upper face procedures consisting of the brow lift, lower blepharoplasty, and upper blepharoplasty. The brow lift aims at “addressing frown muscle imbalance, upper eyelid aesthetics, lateral temporal laxity, and abnormal expression.” The blepharoplasty addresses tired-looking eyes, droopy eyelids, and skin laxity around the eye area.

For mid face procedures, Dr. Devgan begins with the rhinoplasty. The rhinoplasty can encompass a number of nose-related concerns, which she highlights individually: the dorsal hump, deviated septum, nasal tip rotation and projection, and nasal osteotomies. She concludes her mid face subsection, with the lip lift, which improves vertical height of the lip, while also addressing an elongated philtrum.

Wrapping up her article, Dr. Devgan discusses lower face surgeries, including face and neck lifts, and submental liposuction. For the face and neck lift, she says “the focus is placed on resuspending the muscular substructure,” which restores bone structure and definition to the jaw, cheek, and neck. Submental liposuction is performed to address aging and unwanted fat deposition around the neck and chin areas, or a double chin. The procedure brings back definition and jaw contouring to this area. "Do Lip Plumping Glosses Really Work? Experts Tell All" - iDiva Consults Dr. Devgan for her Expertise

idiva_lip-plumping_2.jpg

iDiva, India’s number one lifestyle site for women, recently published an article uncovering the efficacy of lip plumping glosses, along with other cosmetic alternatives for women desiring fuller lips. Around the globe, women are exploring a variety of techniques, from diy cupping methods to topical serums. As one of the top plastic surgeons in the industry and all-around beauty expert with her best-selling Platinum Lip Plumper, Dr. Devgan was asked to share her expertise on the subject.

Generally, lip-plumping glosses contain ingredients that cause mild irritation. This results in both subtle swelling and increased blood flow to the area, translating to fuller, pinker lips. Dr. Devgan mentions that many common ingredients that cause irritation are peppermint, cinnamon, or capsicum, none of which harm the body. However, some brands resort to riskier alternatives when concocting their lip-plumping glosses, like bee venom, which causes inflammation, and should be avoided.

Dr. Devgan’s Platinum Lip Plumper contains hyaluronic acid and Vitamin B3 (Niacin) to achieve not only a pinker and plumper look, but a more hydrated lip. Products containing hyaluronic acid are recommended, as there is the least potential for irritation. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-made lubricant within the body, and also a primary ingredient in many dermal fillers. Read the full article here.

The New York Post recently published the article “DIY Beauty Injectables are Fueling a ‘horrifying’ Online Black Market,” exploring the dangerous new trend of online injectable sales and tutorials. Dr. Devgan was consulted for her expertise on why this is such a risky practice.

With private, online merchants selling at-home injectable kits, some for as low as $85 (syringe included), and an increased presence of Youtube tutorial videos on how to properly perform the procedure, more people are experimenting with DIY procedures. Dr. Devgan says, “This is one of the most dangerous and irresponsible trends I’ve heard of, because facial anatomy is incredibly complex. The risks include tissue death, permanent blindness and disfigurement.”

This seems to have become an epidemic: as soon as tutorial videos are taken down, two more pop. Dr. Devgan adds, “social media and the Internet have made injectables look so easy, but the technical aspects of these procedures require extensive knowledge of tissue behavior and anatomic relationship.” Read the full article here.

Dr. Devgan Featured on Dr. Anthony Youn's Holistic Plastic Surgery Show

Podcast-Thumbnail-1-300x300.jpg

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Youn’s podcast, “The Holistic Plastic Surgery Show” features both conventional and alternative health experts in the holistic health and beauty industries to discuss the newest anti-aging practices, tips to lose weight and feel great, and profound insights into the state of medicine today. He recently had Dr. Devgan on his show to discuss noninvasive plastic surgery procedures.

Dr. Youn and Dr. Devgan discuss the upward trend in noninvasive procedures, specifically facial contouring and optimization with injectable fillers. Dr. Devgan believes that the nonsurgical alternatives of cosmetic enhancement are gaining popularity because there’s fewer stigmas around them. Not only that, but there is less downtime, expense, scarring, risk, and commitment.

Dr. Devgan also attributes the rise of noninvasive plastic surgery to a new ideal of beauty. “I think that we’re sort of entering a new era, where people are wanting to look like the best version of themselves, rather than like someone else, so people don’t necessarily want brand new, major transformation. They may just want a slightly optimized alteration of a feature they already like so-so, but they want to like even better.” Find the full interview here.

"How Subtle Lip Injections Can Transform Your Entire Face" - Dr. Devgan Offers Expertise to The Zoe Report

Lauren Caruso of The Zoe Report recently published an article entitled “How Subtle Lip Injections Can Transform Your Entire Face,” where she shares her first-time experience with lip injections. Caruso reached out to Dr. Devgan regarding her thoughts on the procedure, as well as the cultural shift surrounding cosmetic optimization.

The general perception of cosmetic alteration - or “optimization” as Dr. Devgan calls it - has evolved from previous years, as current patients have moved away from the idea that bigger is better. Dr. Devgan’s personal aesthetic has always been on the subtle side, as she has prefers to highlight those features her patients already find beautiful about themselves. She adds “human beings are programmed to notice discrepancies as small as one millimeter, so something as subtle as a little volume can completely change the way facial beauty is received.”

The article continues to discuss the variety of FDA-approved products available for the lips - or “paints on a palette” as Dr. Devgan calls them -and how different products can be used to do different things, i.e softening, plumping, or creating more structure. Additionally, inspiration photos can be a big help for doctors to understand their patients’ desired outcome. Read the full article here.
