Plump, pillowy lips have taken the beauty world by storm over the past year. Celebrities like Kylie Jenner have not only turned large lips into a trademark feature, but also created empires from the sale of lip products.

Although lip fillers have been around since the 1980s, lip injections have recently surged in popularity. They have increased 48% since 2000, which means that a lip injection procedure now occurs, on average, every 19 minutes.

Lip plumpers are a good option to create fuller lips but many popular products use ingredients such as capsicum (an ingredient found in chili peppers), cinnamon, or bee venom that purposely irritate the sensitive lip skin.  The irritation causes blood to rush to the skin surface resulting in a mild and temporary plumping of the lips due to transient swelling.
